Czech Coffee Culture on the Rise

Czech Coffee Culture on the Rise

Send by e-mail
  • Though gradually improving in recent years, coffee culture still suffers from fundamental lack of knowledge in a number of Czech restaurants and cafés, which is demonstrated by their putting wrong coffee names as well as incorrect coffee preparation. For example, espresso must meet several fixed criteria, there is no “big” or “small” espresso, the latter commonly, though incorrectly called “piccolo”. Indeed, this name, pure invention of the Czechs, is found on menus with surprising frequency. More information about characteristics of a real espresso (as well as those of a faked one) is available at Piccolo neexistuje (“Piccolo does not exist”) Initiative website. Nevertheless, and fortunately, a number of cafés all over the country already offer fresh fine quality coffee, frequently from local coffee roasting plants. The most popular Czech coffee roasting plants include Mamacoffee, first fair-trade roasting plant in Central Europe, Doubleshot, Coffee Source or a family one called Coffeespot. The upcoming weekend, 15 and 16 November, you will have a unique possibility of tasting coffee from the above-mentioned coffee roasting plants as well as from many others, while also getting to know some interesting information about coffee culture. Prague Market in Holešovice hosts already third year of Prague Coffee Festival targeted at all coffee lovers, general public as well as professional baristas.
