  • In October Czech gardens yield various kinds of vegetables, mainly cabbage and greens. Indeed, October weather with its typical humidity favours growing of roots, though it is necessary to protect the harvest against first frosts that might appear. Some kinds of vegetables should even be harvested unripe to mature at home. Scheduling the harvest for the right time ensures your vegetables to be rich in vitamins and minerals, affecting also its taste. Moreover, it is also vital for future stocking. In general, vegetables should be ideally kept in airy cold place (such as cellars or garages). Root vegetables, such as carrots, celery or horseradish harvested in October, if stored for longer time, should be put into wet sand. Besides, October is the peak harvest time for pumpkins, kohlrabi, leek, cauliflower or broccoli. Pumpkins can be used to prepare delicious soup or not so traditional, though very tasty pie. Kohlrabi, which tastes good raw as well as fried, gratin or cooked, can be also added into salads and soups. Another favourite kind of vegetable is leek, ideal for a simple though delicious soup, but it can be also used in salted pies, meat mixtures, potato or rice dishes as well as salads and spreads.
