Traditional Czech Liquors

  • Renown particularly for great beer and high-quality Moravian wines, Czech Republic produces also a number of liquors and alcoholic beverages popular even in distant foreign countries. Becherovka, harmonious herbal liquor made of more than twenty herbs and spices, is an example of a traditional one that has made plenty of success even abroad. Produced in the town of Karlovy Vary since 1807, it was originally called English Bitter and intended to heal stomach diseases. Nowadays, it has been exported to all continents except for Antarctica. Its basic ingredient is a unique herbs and spices mixture giving the liquor its natural and full taste. Fernet Stock is another example of herbal liquor popular for its typical bitter taste. Similarly to Becherovka, this Pilsner-produced beverage with more than ninety years of tradition is found on menus in all restaurants and bars. It is composed of herbs not only from the Czech Republic but also from Cameroon, Indonesia and Pyrenees, including gentian root, quinine peel, wormwood tops and Roman camomile, though precise compositions is producers’ secret. “Kmínka” (cumin beverage), is a liquor with particular taste and aroma based on cumin, soaked in fine ethanol together with herbal infusion. Though nowadays somewhat neglected, “Kmínka” with its harmonious full taste is a Czech restaurant classic. Mead is yet another alcoholic beverage associated with Czech countries for dozens of centuries. One of the first alcoholic drinks ever produced, this fermented beverage made of honey and water is surprisingly rather tricky to prepare. High-quality and often home-made mead can be purchased on farmers’ and city markets: this delicious and sweet drink will definitely warm you up especially on cold winter days.
