The season of Czech asparagus, king of spring vegetables, is in full swing. This fine and charmingly tasting delicacy takes your prepared specialties into another dimension, being at the same time very healthy and, since Ancient Times, has been used as natural aphrodisiac.
World taste and quality
Cultivated for a long time in the Czech Republic, Czech asparagus is worldwide reputed for its high quality, though it is not so widely known. Nowadays, the “kings’ vegetable” has found its way also on Czech plates. Harvested in two types – white and green, they are both cultivated from the same variety. The former grows under canvas and when harvested, special knives are used to cut it right above the ground. The latter is not covered; its green colour results from chlorophyll produced in the plant.
Freshness in the First Place
To enjoy the taste of asparagus, it is necessary to buy it fresh, therefore ideally directly from farmers where it is grown, or in the markets. Some practical tips and recommendations for asparagus selection and preparation are available at
