  • Even though most of Czech beers that can be purchased in shops or tasted drought in pubs are lower fermented pale lagers, the less numerous group of semi-dark and dark beers should definitely not be neglected. Compared to Pilsner-type pale lagers, typical of their bitterness, dark beer, also called “black beer” is finer and sweeter in taste. Prepared from dark, coloured or caramelized malt, it even has caramel flavour, its finer taste being especially popular with women. However, even strong fans of pale lager find from time to time a pint of black beer pleasant change, especially as regards beer that can be tasted uniquely on the place of its production. Czech Specials certified restaurants include a number of mini-breweries all around the country, offering besides delicious Czech cuisine also dark beer. For example Černý orel Restaurant and Boarding House in Kroměříž serves great coffee-flavour dark lager with harmonized bitterness. In Groll Brewery in Pilsen you can try 14 degree dark special called “Kapr” (Carp), 2014 beer specials winner in Beerfest Competition. Vítek z Prčice Restaurant in Prčice municipality offers fully-tasting dark lager featuring fine bitterness, while Prague U Tří růží Restaurant and mini-brewery serves a range of unique beer specials, including dark lager made of five types of malt.
